Task 1 overview: - find two episodes of soap operas/shows from two different cultures - choose 5min from each for an analysis (should be comparable in terms of type of people, their relationship, type of conversation, setting). - transcribe (write down) the excerpts. Analyse based on: - time (feedback, interruptions, tolerance of silence) - space (interpersonal distance, touching vs non-touching cultures) - nonverbal communication (culturally determined gestures, eye contact) - etiquette (greetings, gift giving, smoking, taboos, eating) + describe the beginning tune and images of the two shows (based on above analysis + gender, age, general atmosphere) and compare + describe the story line of the scenes and the type of interaction (e.g. love talk, quarrelling, lying, problem talk, taboo talk, etc.) Work with two hypotheses: - soaps are culturally specific *to a certain point) - soaps reflect the culture in which they are made Max 3000 words.
