Taste of Food: Have you remember the food which you have cherished - TopicsExpress

Taste of Food: Have you remember the food which you have cherished most? The best food ever anybody have tasted is his/her mother’s milk. I am asking about the next best food or tasty food(not necessarily the best food), what you have taken in your life time. By the grace of God, I have tasted food from seven star hotels to road side dhaba of most of the capital cities of India. I also tasted food in many large cities across the world. I also took food in many interior rural areas of the country. Many a times, I had to take food from open food stalls when volume of food increases as rain fall increases. Some time, I have to consume half cooked food and some time, over cooked food. Some time, I have to consume good quality food and some time very bad food. My contention is that, as some body referred about me that, I am carrying Kua(well) instead of a pet(stomach) and jibha (tongue) without taste bud, I can consume all sort of food without any complain ( Though now a days, I also restrict my food consumption in terms of quantity). So, you may ask me, how I can cherish food without iota of preference for good food as such! But, as you know, sometimes unexpected things happen from an unsuspected corner. Yes, still I remember the date when I took the second best tasty food in my life. It was 5th January, 1980. I was with a medical team( doctors from Dibrugarh Medical college) to visit some injured persons who were injured in a firing incident. Alongwith the doctors, Shri Swapan Sharma( the then Debating Secretary, CC) and I were in two Ambassador cars. We started our journey at around 8 O’clock in the morning hoping that we shall take our lunch some where on the way. Since the injured persons were scattered over a very large area, it took a lot of time to visit each and everyone injured in the incident. Most of the persons were so poor that they could not offer anything to eat in the whole day. Further, as we were far away from main town we did not find any eateries on the road/villages we visited. Our problems enhanced further, when one of the cars broke down at around 6 in the evening. The driver tried his best to repair the vehicle, but he could not do and had to abandoned the idea to repair the vehicle at around 8 o’clock. So all the occupants of the other car also came to our car, totalling the passenger strength to 13 in our car, including the driver. At 11 o Clock, we reached the high way connecting to Naharkatia and Dibrugarh and finally we found a dhaba which was about to be closed. The dhaba owner, told us that there was nothing substantial to eat. Moreover, he is not in a position to cook anything for us. After repeated plea from us, he agreed to give all the stale rootis, kept for stray dogs and cold dal. But after examining the quantity of available dal, he said that dal might not be enough unless some cold water would be added. So dal was mixed with cold water and served to us. Imagine in ordinary condition, in the month of January, stale rooties with cold watered dal, if it is served to someone what will be his/her reaction! But believe me, all of us took the food with all excitement and licked the utensils where dal was served. In my opinion, that was the second best food I have ever taken! PS: I am writing this because some of my friends were complaining about food served in JW Marriot Hotel, Chandigarh on our recent visit to the city to attend TOT for 71st round NSS. Dedicated this post to all the street dogs, who did not get their food in the morning after we took their food on the fateful previous night.
