Tay-Sachs Disease is a fatal genetic disorder that causes progressive destruction of the central nervous system resulting in the early death of children. Tay-Sachs children initially appear healthy, but development slows, vision fades. Most children experience loss of coordination, trouble swallowing and breathing, seizures and diminishing mental function by about two years of age. The child’s development will reverse, never reaching the normal development milestones or walking or talking. Eventually the child will be unable to crawl, turn over, sit or reach out. The child will become blind, paralyzed, non-responsive to their surroundings. By the time a child with Tay-Sachs is three or four years old, the central nervous system is so badly affected that life cannot be supported. Even with the best care, all children with Tay-Sachs die in early childhood, usually by the age of five.
