Technique advice on Farmers walk from Strongman Kalle Beck Farmers walk Setup with your feet slightly behind the handles you should have your toes roughly in the middle of the handle. Bend at the hips keeping a flat back to get down to the handles. On most farmer handles you will want to grip slightly back of neutral on the handles. This is for two reasons. 1 as you pick up the handles the the back end will come up first so you are not picking up the entire weight from a dead stop. This will make the pick much easier and 2 with the handles titled forward it will pull you forward and you can use the weight to help you go faster by trying to keep up with the handles When you grip the handles you want to really set your grip by putting the handles deep in your palm and keeping your wrist bent. As you pick up the weight your wrists will straighten out and the weight will torque deep into your palms and your hands will have a vise like grip. This is very painful at first but will Pay off big time. When picking the handles flare your lats and tighten your back. Breath deep into your stomach and drop your hips to imitate the lift. It should feel like a partial squat. Keep your back flat and drive with your legs and thrust your hips forward. Before walking make sure you have Control of the implements and start with short choppy steps going heel Toe, heel toe. As you go start to increase your feet speed keeping your back tight and chest up. Look 10feet past the finish line and accelerate through the finish. If you have a turn start setting up for the turn 10-15 feet before it. Start to angle out so you can make a wider turn this will help you keep control of the implements without having to slow down too much. As you start the turn. Rotate your wrist on the inside handle to angle the front of the farmers handle OUT pressing into the outside handle. As you turn the handles will start to swing away from you. By turning the inside handle out this will make it swing back to neutral instead of away from you. On the turn as soon as the handle turns back to neutral catch it! By starting to walk straight and go with the momentum
