Ted here...7:45 pm....this was issued by Perth Mayor Terry Ritchie about 5 minutes ago concerning the ice moving on the St. John.....(all times he refers to are 1 hour later than Maine time) *** Media/public alert THE ICE JAM ABOVE US HAS BROKEN. The ice field travellingtwards us is about 7km long not 40. IT should be passing over the falls into the gorge momentarily. WE expect it here about four hours after that, althugh it could be longer. IT is expeced through the village about 10:30-11pm tonight, when the emergency committee willbe meeting again. We wont have a clear idea of the volume of water we will be dealing with until it starts to pass over Grand Falls when greater breakup of the already bushy ice will occur. RIver levels here have fallen so low we have about 1.5 m or 6 clear at this point. Only the jam below us at Muniac, which has still not moved presents any danger. WE will be keeping you informed on a regular basis throughout the night. Pray for our village but stay safe AND DONT PANIC. We have already had one big break. THat doesnt mean there cant be another God bless.
