Televisions great for turning frowns upside down, but what if ear-to-ear grinning was compulsory? SmileTV is more a wacky blend of art and tech that demands viewer contentment if viewers want to keep watching the tele. Designed and created by artist David Hedberg, this oddball creation will only play footage if the viewer is smiling. If your face drops, the image goes fuzzy until you perk up again. Bad reception used to be associated with the poor technical performance of an antenna. Just a decade ago it was much clearer who dictates the information which we absorb, says Hedberg, on his site. Now, with content widely accessible the question is no longer if we can receive but if we are receptive. There doesnt seem to be any normal channels on the tube, with the screen instead playing obscure clips from The Sound of Music and other abstract madness. The TV is equipped with a camera that tracks the users facial expressions, then feeding the data back to the tele and determining whether or not to play content. By expressing that we like something, we have very much become antennas ourselves -- transmitting the content on to somebody else, philosophises Hedburg. This TV installation elaborates with facial recognition technology and a last-decade TV set to re-consider viewers engagement and how content is accessed. It only works if we smile.
