Tensions in the Middle East are affecting many in the Mid-South. On Saturday, Local 24s Austin Lewis spoke with Palestine supporters at a local rally. Today, the Local 24 team will cover the Rally for Israel. Last April, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said the window for a two-state solution is shutting. I think we have some period of time a year, a year and a half, to two years or its over. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has said he is open to a solution where a demilitarized Palestinian state exists alongside the Jewish state but there cannot be a situation, under any agreement, in which we relinquish security control of the territory west of the River Jordan. A majority of Palestinians now oppose a two-state solution. Palestinian leader Abbas has said, If you don’t want to give me independence, at least give me civil rights. That’s an easier way, peaceful way. Countries need to have the ability to protect themselves and provide for their citizens. As international support for Israel wanes, diminishing the states power in the region, and as the number of Palestinian refugees grows, creating greater instability within Palestine, is a two-state solution still a viable answer to the conflict? Why or why not?
