Terce – Gravitas: “As I watched the faces at the communion - TopicsExpress

Terce – Gravitas: “As I watched the faces at the communion line this morning on EWTN the word ‘gravitas’ came to mind. Yes, one should not approach the Body of Christ in a frivolous or nonchalant manner but with ‘gravitas’. However, grave seriousness could also be scary.” When I was in the monastery, there was this fellow novice we nicknamed Professor Gravitas, arising from his serious bearing. As I watched the faces at the communion line this morning on EWTN the word ‘gravitas’ came to mind. Yes, one should not approach the Body of Christ in a frivolous or nonchalant manner but with ‘gravitas’. However, grave seriousness could also be scary. The folks I saw this morning all had the facial expression of someone about to submit to the guillotine or drink quinine (that bitter anti-malarial torment of years ago). I was thinking that if I were a Hindu, I would probably not be very curious about whatever it was these fellows were about to receive, judging by their facial expressions. The Body of Christ should be received with ‘gravitas’ yes, but with that ‘gravitas’ of solemn demeanor and joyful expectation. Mind you, I am not saying that one should go forth with a broad fixed grin of the Cheshire cat, but lighten up folks, the world is watching. Taste and see that the LORD is good (Psalm 34:8)
