Terre des Hommes Netherlands supports CRC@25: Children remind governments on their obligation to fulfill 20 November 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child which was ratified by 194 countries worldwide. While there have been positive changes on the situation of children, child-focused organisations including Terre des Hommes Netherlands together with child rights advocates and the children themselves remind governments in Southeast Asia about their obligation to ensure the full enjoyment of rights to all children. In Indonesia, Yayasan Setara and Indonesia Against Child Trafficking (Indonesia ACT) will mobilise at least 300 children from Bali, Yogyakarta, Solo, Semarang and other respective areas at a Children’s Jamboree in Semarang City, Central Java on 22 and 23 November along with theater performances, art exhibits, poetry, music and songs that depict the situation of child trafficking survivors and children at risk of exploitation. A Children’s Declaration that details recommendations for government actions, discussed, agreed and drafted by the children themselves will be presented to the Governor Ganjar Prawono of Central Java by the representatives of children forum. The same declaration will be submitted to the local governments where the children come from. In Jakarta, the two-week event including an exhibit in the parliament office by AKSI/2015 on 17 to 19 November that aims to contribute in increasing the awareness of the new members of the parliament on child rights. Meanwhilst in Myanmar, a week-long event in Yangon and Mandalay with the participation of Equality Myanmar and United Against Child Trafficking (United ACT) and other members of the Destination Unknown Campaign, is now on-going through to 23 November. Theatre performance and community discussion on issues of children on the move will be highlighted including the participation of renowned artists in public events and the media interview with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on issues on child rights and children on the move. On 21 November, Ratana Metta will convene children in Shan State for experience-sharing and fun-filled activities. In Thailand, the members of Partners on the Rights of Children on the Move (ProCOM) join activities of CRC Coalition in Bangkok. While in Cambodia, Cambodia Against Child Trafficking (Cambodia ACTs) participate in the drafting of joint statement on CRC. Several events in the Philippines mounted by NGO partners include a renewal of commitment on child rights by the government in Cabanatuan City on 28 November to be spearheaded by I Against Child Trafficking (I ACT) a youth group member of the Philippines Against Child Trafficking (PACT); school education campaign on child rights for teachers on 20 and 28 November led by Adolescent Health Advocates, a member of PACT-Davao; youth forum 27 November organised by PACT Iriga; awareness raising and children’s activities in Cebu and in Ormoc City by FORGE and ECLIPSE, respectively. The momentous occasion is a venue for closer collaboration between and among NGOs and INGOs and other civil society in Southeast Asia to share resources and expertise and to express commitment and solidarity in ensuring promotion of dignity and protection of rights of all children.
