Terrified Paddar residents complainof VDC atrocities We’re Restoring Confidence Of People: DGP Kishtwar Violence Srinagar, Sep 4: In the wake of the migration of Muslim population from different areas of Paddar in Kishtwar district due to alleged atrocities by Village Defence Committee (VDC) members, the government has established a police post in the area. Residents of several villages including Atholi, Kejai and Afani alleged that VDC members have made their lives a hell. Reports revealed that VDC members allegedly pelt stones on the houses of Muslims and threaten to kill them in case they demand disbanding of VDCs and raise their voice against their atrocities. The residents alleged that administration gave a cold shoulder to their pleas when they sought relief from the atrocities of armed VDCmen. "Armed Police has been deployed in those areas," Director General of Police, Ashok Prasad,told Kashmir. He said that Kishtwar is gradually returning to normalcy. "Every effort is being made to restore the confidence of Kishtwar people," Prasad said. He said that police was investigating the mysterious disappearance of a laborer in Paddar area of Kishtwar. However, official sources said that in case VDC ‘atrocities’ are not stopped, the area might erupt again."Government is making efforts to stop eruption of August 9-like situation again,” an official of Home Department told Kashmir 24 on the basis of anonymity. He said that on August 29, the residents of some villages from Paddar met the district administration. "They asked for security because of VDC threats," the official said adding that Muslims in Kishtwar have expressed resentment over the harassment of people in Paddar. "Though not openly, but Muslims of Kishtwar town have sent signals that things are not OK in Paddar and government has taken note of that,” the official added. Deputy Inspector General, Kishtwar, Ashkoor Ahmad Wani said a Superintendent of Police has been posted in the area to handle the situation. “The situation is being monitored closely. We have also established a police post in the area. We are training 12 local SPOs of the area. Till they are not trained properly, additional force will remain deployed in the area," he said.
