Terry and I were discussing Gov Cuomos End AIDS by 2020 initiative and it prompted me to crunch some numbers. (source: WHO 2011, 2012) There are approximately 3,000 new HIV infections/year in NY State, an incidence of 15.3/100,000. The goal of Cuomos 2020 plan is to reduce new infections to 750/year, to an incidence of 3.8/100,000. We need to cut new infections by 75% to achieve this goal. In comparison: USA = 15.7/100,000 (50,000 new cases), 76% cut needed to reach goal UK = 10/100K (6,280 new cases), 62% cut needed Euro area = 6.6/100K (30,000 new cases), 42% cut needed France = 6.3/100K (4,075 new cases), 40% cut needed Germany = 3.7/100K (3,000 new cases), their epidemic is over Please note the correlation between economic inequality and HIV incidence, as measured by GINI coefficient (higher = more inequality): USA = 41 UK = 36 France = 33 Germany = 28
