The Houston Texans have only a slim chance of making the playoffs. To stave off elimination, they must take down the division rival Jacksonville Jaguars. Despite the incredible play of defensive end J.J. Watt, the Texans have been stymied by poor play at the quarterback position. Ryan Fitzpatrick was the team’s opening day starter, and while he avoided too many costly turnovers, he failed to put enough points on the board. The problem was exacerbated when star running back Arian Foster missed three weeks in November. Still, Houston’s defense has kept the team’s hopes alive, holding opponents to the 10th-fewest points per game. The Jaguars’ record isn’t impressive, but they have improved over the course of the season. Rookie quarterback Blake Bortles has a penchant for turnovers, but he has also shown an increasing ability to make big plays as both a passer and a runner. Aiding the cause has been Denard Robinson who has settled in nicely as the team’s lead tailback. Along with rookie receivers Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns, they form a talented young nucleus in Jacksonville. Houston’s moribund offense received a lift last week by Fitzpatrick. The journeyman signal caller tossed an unexpected six touchdowns against his former team the Tennessee Titans. The primary beneficiary of Fitzpatrick’s career day was second-year receiver DeAndre Hopkins who hauled in nine catches for 238 yards, an astonishing 26.4 yards per reception. On defense, Watt was his usual disruptive self, notching two sacks and another tackle for loss along with six hits on the quarterback. He also caught his third touchdown pass of the season. The rookie Robinson leads the Jaguars in receiving yards with 548. Hurns come in at a close second with 530 while leading the team in receiving touchdowns (five) and plays of 20 or more yards (nine). On defense, Jacksonville has a pair of reliable pass rushers in Chris Clemons and Sen’Derrick Marks. Each has registered seven sacks through 13 weeks and 35 or more tackles. Safety Jonathan Cyprien has the most tackles on the team with 82. The Texans enter the game with a record of 6-6. The Jaguars come in at 2-10.
