Texas has a serious problem with feral pigs. It has gotten so bad that the state has removed any restrictions on killing them. For the past several years Texans have been allowed to shoot pigs year round day or night. The problem with feral pigs is that they are very destructive. Pigs are opportunists and will eat most anything. They will root and destroy many acres crops in a single night, they will kill and eat livestock like calves and lambs, even the deer herd is now being effected, and the pigs have also been known to attack people on occasion. Another concern is the pigs notorious reputation for carrying diseases communicable to both animals and humans. The feral pig population has been a concern in farm and cattle country for a number of years but recent concerns have moved to more densely populated areas. Due to the inability to hunt them for obvious safety reasons the pig population has been exploding in the outskirts and suburban areas surrounding cities like Waco, Austin, Houston, and Dallas. The pigs have been able to thrive in these areas due to an ample supply of food. They turn over garbage cans and destroy landscaping and gardens. They have killed and eaten a number of dogs and there have even been reports of pigs rooting up peoples yards so severely they have destroyed septic systems and pipes causing raw sewage to run down the streets. This has caused great health concerns by many officials in these areas. Programs to trap these animals have been put in place but pigs have an above average intelligence and have proven themselves difficult to capture. Beware the Walkin Dude.
