Thai-US relations Note from a smart man: Red website and media, further expanded by BBC Thai, proclaimed a large demonstration against Gen Prayuth in Milan when the Thai PM was in town for the Asia-Europe meeting. In reality, a couple of Red activists made some protest posters and joined an ongoing demonstration by local students against some racist issue, totally unconnected, asked some Italians to hold the posters and took photos. The Thai Reds also told the Italians that Gen Prayuth personally ordered the killing of the Italian newsman who died in the 2010 Red Shirt uprising. A large number of Thais in Italy did actually turn up, not to protest but to show support for the Thai PM. Sometime governments, even Western ones, become victims of their own propaganda. While the US and her Western allies continue to shun the Prayuth Government and show empathy for supporters of the defunct Ying Luck regime, the Thai government is moving on. While the West is probably joining the Reds in celebrating the alleged protest against Prayuth in Milan, the Thai Prime Minister was making highly significant gains, centered on three separate full delegation bilateral meetings with the Prime Ministers of Japan, China and Singapore, laying the groundwork for wide ranging cooperation and major investments, at the same time receiving pledges of full support for the Prayuth government. With the full backing of Asias three economic giants, in addition to previously committed support from India, I dont think Gen. Prayuth will be quivering under American pressure any time soon. Indeed, many Thais believe that Ambassador Kristie Kenny was just doing what she was told, pursuing a look to the future policy to lay the groundwork for turning Thailand into a republic (for which Thaksin was the prime candidate for presidency) under the tutelage of America. The more corrupt or despotic a Thaksin republican regime, the more it would rely on American support for survival, and thus be more and more subservient to the wishes of the Pentagon and Wall Street. Thinking people here are quietly expressing concern about the new, yet unannounced, US Ambassador, likely to be a real pro who would prove far more dangerous to Thai nationhood than our twittering lady. Oh well, Cheers, hope you are keeping well.
