Thank God Theres the Internet I could just imagine what the world would be back then in the 80s when not so much about the world can be accessible in the Philippines. Stuck in a Third World Country, only a number of the information would be relayed to the local people. It will be totally a world where everything happens in isolated cases and what has happened today would be totally just a bits of information that you will read in your local dailies. That was the world when I was young and I would not mind that many people during that time would not think about how they can make a difference in their life by learning a lot from the internet. Simply, they do not care about the world as it will just be another story to be printed in the local dailies. Way back in the 80s, it is a luxury that you have a satellite TV where you could get access to different channels from the United States. If you know about the world then, you must be some kind of someone in the high society. And since elites are the only one who have this knowledge, they would not care if the masses are just way too ignorant of what is happening around. The people will be in complete ignorance without knowing where to go and what to do. If the internet could have been early, it would be able to reverse some of the irreversible things that the world has experienced like global warming. Since then, many people could have stopped using CFC and gas emission could be cut within this decade. It could not be possible then because the personal computer has just started in 80s thanks to Jobs and Wozniak and their merry bands of geek whiz. Lots of endangered species could have been preserved. And it could have stopped the 9/11 bombing. China could be a democratic state right now and Hong Kong could have been just another territory attached to China from British rule. In the Philippines, we could have prevented another EDSA 2 and the likelihood of action stars to be the pilot of our nation. We could have even stopped Janet Napoles of pocketing billions of tax money. These are just some of the thing that could not happen if the internet was around a decade earlier. The 90s brought internet within the reach of everyone. I remember that an internet access costs around PHP 20 per hour. For me, this was a very good price and I have to set some of my allowance in order for me to have access to wide array of information that Ive not known since then. Thanks to the wizardry of Larry Paige and Sergey Brin, we have Google to do our searches. I would also like to thank Yahoo for that unwavering support for us to get free email account. Without such, our correspondence would take days. We could even send letters to someone in just a few clicks. That was a wonder back then and it was totally a revolutionary thing that had happened to us. Everything changed with the internet around. We have the luxury of information. Just imagine, I can even access articles in New York Times without having been to New York. We know what New York City looks like by just clicking on Google Maps Street viewer and voila, you are now in New York City. And Wikipedia gives us access to information instantly even if a significant part of it could be made up and not true. There are several things that has changed. Like, we know that Indians are not the Native Americans but those people coming from India. And that they have a very rich culture. We have added a catalogue of countries in our list like the Baltic States of Latvia and Lithuania and that Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia are no where to be found in the world map anymore. We were able to unravel the evils of United States through Wikileaks. And lastly, we were able to get information instantly and react to it. The world has changed thanks to the internet. Qadaffi is no longer the ruler of Libya, so as Saddam Hussein in Iraq as well. Afghanistan was freed from Taliban. And the Arabs are learning more and exerting their right to especially the women. The Arab springs brought down these regimes. In other parts of the world, corporations are no longer corrupt as anyone with the access could just upload it in the Wikileaks. Stars can be made inside the living room by just creating their own cover of the song. Of course, Justin Bieber is an example of this. And free access to movies, music, files, and all other geek stuff thanks to peer to peer sharing. If God created the world, then, God could have brought this gift to mankind. I am referring to the Internet.
