Thank you Allie Conn and the Columbia/Barnard Hillel team for our nomination. Since we value education, we decided to teach everyone a little bit about ALS in the process. ALS stands for Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. It is often referred to as Lou Gehrigs Disease,” after the baseball player who made people aware of the disease. This disease belongs to a group of disorders known as Motor neurons diseases. Motor neurons are nerve cells located in the brain stem and spinal cord that serve as controlling units in vital communication links between the nervous system and the voluntary muscles of the body. In ALS, the ability of the brain to start and control voluntary movement in lost. There is no cure yet. The money that the ‘Ice Bucket Challenge” raises will help fund research for the disease. Michigan Hillel staff decided alongside dumping ice water on our head. We are each donating money as well. GO BLUE! Donate here: bit.ly/1vS6Aev
