Thank you Georgianna for this letter to the editor & thank you Ketchikan for the outpouring of support in the First City! SUPPORT BILL WALKER FOR GOVERNOR By Georgianna Zimmerle Published in Ketchikans SitNews October 15, 2014 Wednesday AM I support Bill Walker for Governor. In 2010, I received a request from a man whose opinion I respect asking me to look at Bill Walker who was challenging the incumbent for the Governor’s seat. John Hozey worked with me when I was the Borough Manager. I know John to be a hardworking man with integrity. Since leaving Ketchikan, John has advanced in his career as staff to Senator Ted Stevens and now as City Manager of Valdez. So I did some research. I learned that Bill Walker grew up developing a great work ethic. His experience comprises not only successful private sector businesses; but also, he has experience in the workings of local government. Local government embraces policymaking that is closest to the people. A solid background in local government is a great asset for the governor. Equally important is an understanding of what it takes to make a payroll and operate a successful private sector business. I learned that Bill Walker and his wife, Donna, attended college together and both earned law degrees. As an attorney, Bill gained more experience with Alaska local government as well as an intimate knowledge of Alaska’s important resources of oil and gas. Many of us worked and lived in SE Alaska and watched timber, another of Alaska’s great resources, shut down. We cannot afford another demise of Alaskan resource harvesting. I appreciated Bill Walker’s background. After getting to know him, I learned his conservative politics closely aligns with my own. In my own career, I did my best to adhere to honest, fair, and ethical behavior. I admire common sense. I find these qualities in Bill Walker. I listened to Bill Walker and Byron Mallot separately as each described the circumstances, pros and cons, and ultimate benefit of creating The Unity Ticket. It is better to bend than to break. With common sense, I believe each man and his supporters put the best interests of the people of Alaska first. I encourage each of you as responsible voters to check out the facts for yourself and vote on November 4. I hope you join me and support The Unity Ticket. Georgianna Zimmerle Ketchikan, Alaska Past Ketchikan Gateway Borough Manager.
