Thank you Paula Meyer: ACTUALLY, THE SECRECY AND THE LIES ARE MAINTAINED BY PRO-CORPORATE AND PRO-CHARTER ADMINS, NOT TEACHERS AND RESEARCHERS. WEVE BEEN BROADCASTING THIS SECRET FOR DECADES. Posted by Jim Crawford to elladvocates: Excellent letter by Tatyana Kleyn in response to nypost/…/06/the-big-lie-we-tell-english-learners/ The Secret We Keep from Bilingual Learners/English Language Learners Dear Editors, Mike Gonzalez (October 6, “The Big Lie We Tell English Learners”) makes sweeping claims about bilingual education based on his experiences from long ago. Fortunately, these programs have improved dramatically in the last 40 years. Students in dual language programs now become bilingual and biliterate by spending 50% of their instructional time in English, with the other 50% in an additional language. English is important, but in our globalizing world we can’t afford to lose our students’ home languages in the process. In addition, decades of research has found bilingual programs to be the most effective for students who are new to the English language. Over time students in high quality bilingual programs outperform their monolingual peers in English standardized tests and reap the benefits of increased mental flexibility, cross-cultural awareness, and economic opportunities. We have kept a secret from our students for too long. The future of our bilingual learners - as well as ours as a multilingual city - lies not only in their English acquisition, but also in their bilingualism.
