Thank you Project Humanities for another great workshop! I am interested in how the initial privilege activity was designed because in the activities I have participated in guilt and shaming seems to be what most people take from the activity. Not that the objective of the activity was designed that way. But, I left last night thinking most about that particular activity and how disadvantaged I am and people who share similar identities and experiences. Last night, the activity turned out to be more about white guilt and not white privilege. But, why did I leave feeling more disadvantaged than I did when I came? I have noticed conversations about privilege the dominant voice is heard expressing its guilt and how privilege is sometimes a disadvantage, i.e. invisibility and shame. I have participated in the initial activity twice and both times I am usually the one standing significantly behind everyone else. Then I ask myself, “How is this activity about privilege when obviously by the result of the this activity I have little to know privilege? Theoretically, yes as the Black Male Privilege checklist states I have privilege, which I understand. I agree these workshops are not about the individual, but when a group of individuals feel the same does that not matter? I live and realize how disadvantaged I am. However, the manifestation is the result of a systematic condition that started with people who looked like me and experienced obstacles relevant to their time period. Much like most black people do today. So even when we talk about privileges as a group, essentially those privileges for the dominant culture is a disadvantage according to the environmental stimuli for marginalized groups, no matter how many privileges a person has.
