Thank you, Roger, for being one of the few local writers willing to say that the tolls have caused enough people to use alternate-but-out-of-the-way routes to avoid them; however, the tolls do not have to stay nor is there a good reason to toll more highways in the region. If the occasional and part-time representatives in Richmond had the intestinal fortitude to do the right thing and raise the state gas tax - even by a mere pittance - as should have been done 30 years ago, there would be no need for new tolls and there may even be a way to buy out that incredibly draconian Elizabeth River Crossings deal-with-the-devil. Before you start with the that will raise gas prices nonsense (a fiction created by those who benefit from tolled roads), consider: North Carolina has one of the highest gas tax rates in the United States (with very nice, un-tolled roads), and Virginia the lowest tax rate (with some of the worst roads and tolls popping up like toadstools after a month of rain) - yet, the price-per-gallon in NC is about the same as VA. Dont buy into that higher tax means higher pump price nonsense, that is not the way gas prices are calculated. I propose that a poll be taken of every current Virginia legislator as well as potential candidates. Those who support raising the gas tax, regardless of party affiliation, get my vote. Those opposed get the bums rush out the electoral door. Past time to end this nonsense.
