Thankful Thursday: BREAKTHROUGH!!! Last night when I got home from work I asked the typical/daily question to my wife, How was your day and what happened good?. The response this time was not typical at all but enthusiastically she said, we had a breakthrough! You see, my wife is a Special Education Paraeducator with our local Middle School and has been working with a Speaking Disabled student since last year to help him better interact and communicate with others, despite his not being able to speak. Probably since his early years or perhaps even at birth, this young man suffered a stroke which has left him without speech as well as motor skills on his left side of his body. Confidence and acceptance are the biggest hurdles for those of us who are fully enabled, so how much more are those same hurles for those who have disabilities? So every day for the past two school years (last year and this year), my wife has been instructing this particular student on an iPad that has a special Application to assist communication by helping the students select words and/or word phrases. Well, the student could read and understand but couldnt speak. So, he would pick the proper words and/or phrases on his iPad, but because he lacked confidence he would quickly erase or delete whatever he had typed before anyone could read it. My wife noticed what was happening and what he was doing and through reassurance, acceptance and boosting his confidence she began to place her hand over the delete key so that he couldnt erase what was typed. He didnt like this at first and would attempt to pinch her hand but she stayed true to her method of reassuring him that what he had on the iPad was correct by giving him a soothing smile and telling him that it was right and what a great job he was doing. As they were preparing to go outside for recess, Kim noticed that this young man had again written on his iPad but this time he didnt erase it. It simply read Going Outside. We give thanks to our God who can do ALL THINGS. When we lack confidence He reassures us of who we are; when we lack acceptance He tells us that we are His children and have been accepted into the Kingdom of Heaven; when we think that we are at our end, thats where He begins! I thank God for those that He has called and chosen to work with and care for ALL OF HIS CREATION! To those who have been blessed to have a special needs child and for those who are a blessing to work with special needs children...I salute you and I am truly thankful for you! You indeed show us all how to care for one another as our Lord cares for us...both faithfully and eternally! Let us all help someone else have a BREAKTHROUGH today!! Kimberly, I love the Jesus in YOU!!
