Day18, July 23, 2013 CANCELLED We finally had a good plan moving forward -- the volunteers were ready -- the Peters House was to be open – one volunteer (Tom) had gotten the materials necessary for us to continue – but then town staff announced, “Due to newly discovered framing issues in the basement, we are requesting that the volunteer work party scheduled for Tuesday be postponed until we have a resolution.” Darn it – what’s up anyway? We’ve been talking about and showing photos of the lack of support under the old bathroom for several weeks (since Day 2, actually) – is that what this is about? All observations and photos can be found in the logs and in pix posted on “Peters-House-Restoration” on Facebook. We have a group of wonderful volunteers, all knowledgeable, willing, and passionate about the house and the work. These volunteers are contributing their time and talent. They are providing their own tools for accomplishing every task. They have work experience in construction, cabinetry, finish and decorative woodwork – undoubtedly electricity and plumbing also. They have built or re-built houses, barns and garages; they have built furniture; they do woodturning; they can handle any job thrown at them. What should they be earning if we had to pay them? We must keep this project moving forward. The Historic Properties Commission, as a Town of Hebron-appointed group passionate about Historic Preservation, is also working as hard as it can in many ways. We are organizing the jobs and work crews; we are arranging with the Parks & Rec department for the unlocking of the Peters House; we are observing and reporting all potential problematic conditions as they are uncovered; we are researching funding opportunities, and presenting same to the Peters House project manager; we are spending our own time and money locating supplies which were not filled by the town staff-requested list so that the project can continue. We are following all the rules – and more! We hope the town staff can get this problem straightened out quickly.
