Thankless and Ungrateful? According to Bill Bryson, the author of A Short History of Nearly Everything, a normal human body is a country of 10,000 trillion citizens (cells), each devoted in some specific way to our overall well-being. There isnt a thing they dont do for us; they lets feel pleasure, form thoughts, enable to stand, stretch and caper. When we eat, they digest, extract and assimilate nutrients, distribute energy, and carry off the wastes. They also remember to make us first hungry and then reward with a feeling of well-being so that we wont forget eat again. The cells keep our hair growing, ear waxed and brain quietly purring. We have so far understood only a little of how these cells do the things they do--how they lay down fat or manufacture insulin and many other necessary things to maintain a complicated entity that we are! We have at least 200,000 different types of proteins laboring away inside us and we have so far understood what no more than 2% of them do. Our body cells manage every corner of our being--they will jump to our defense the instant we are threatened and will unhesitatingly die for us...billions of them do so daily. And we have not stopped once to thank even one of them. So, lets take a moment now to regard and respect them with wonder and appreciation they deserve and be grateful to them all. Lets also have a moment to see whether we have not mis-used or abused this wonderful free gift of nature, our body, by the vises, wrong eating, not exercising and providing enough rest. Babasaheb Desai P.S.: We should pray not only when we need something but because we have a lot to be thankful for...all that we didnt even ask for. The smile on our face shouldnt merely indicate our happiness, but should also mean to indicate our appreciation for what we have and are blessed with so much!
