Thanks Christine Dague for posting the title track to High Country Snows. Ambitious album, full of legendary players. Got me to thinking and suddenly something clicked. So, since schools are closed this Saturday the 24th, a little history reminder. On January 24, 1848 gold was discovered on the American River near Colima, California near a sawmill owned by John Sutter. This had a wee bit of consequence as to the development of the American West. Perhaps Dans inspiration for this song were the results on the land and people and why some would curse John Sutters mill. I dont know. Dan loved the west and its legacies, just as hed later write songs about his love of Maine and European immigrants coming to America. Great musicianship, any chance to hear Jerry Douglass play the Dobro makes it worthwhile to me. Sorry for the history lesson, I just find it interesting. Wikipedia has some good articles on it.
