Thanks Hoffman Wentzel for this excerpt: ‘Frieze is a shuttle of the international art crowd. One dealer says,” we must stop thinking about art as Art in the old museum, 20th-century harsh reverential sense. What it is, is fashion, dear. It’s an international business, with catwalks in different cities.” Frieze London … is a big awkward pile-‘em-high contemporary warehouse, wall-to-Walmart. The cacophony of the avant-garde; messy, smudgy, bad breath, raw and loud. The walls shout at your eyes until they just go blurry. The problem with art is that the bad obscures the good. It’s like a choir where only one person can sing in tune and everyone else bawls. Altogether it looks like an early round of a TV talent show for painting. Part defiant posturing, part insecure over-statement, and part immature enthusiasm – with a modicum of talent.’ Critic AA Gill on the Frieze Art Fair in London, courtesy Vanity Fair issue 641.
