Thanks to Joseph Ciolino, my adventures in following the career of Frehel, an incredible French singer, led me to seeking out her small roles in films, which then led me to the wonderful French film, Pepe le Moko, 1937, from which the 1938 American version of the same story in film, Algiers, starring Charles Boyer and Heddy Lamarr, THEN led me to where a cartoon character portrays Boyer, which I remember well and loved dearly...Pepe Le Pew...and his Charles Boyer exaggerated accent. But what is best is that the quote we love to believe came from the movie, Algiers, is in fact a quote created by Chuck Jones for the cartoon to make fun of Boyer and his character in the movie. The amorous skunk used Come with me to ze Casbah as a pickup line. In 1954, the Looney Tunes cartoon The Cats Bah specifically spoofed Algiers, with the skunk enthusiastically declaring to Penelope the Cat, Do not come with me to ze Casbah...We shall make beautiful musics [sic] togezzer right ere!
