But the incident helped him to see something more clearly than before: that what happened to him wasn’t a fluke. That it was an extreme expression of something bigger and rotten in American life — a vast under-society, sprinkled among the rest of us, who lack good parents and good schools, who have none of the hope that Bhuiyan did as an immigrant.
