Thanks to Senator Tom Apodaca, who represents part of Buncombe County, for his leadership to clean up coal ash storage ponds in our state! Existing coal plants that currently utilize storage ponds must be converted to dry ash and the current storage ponds must be cleaned up and transferred to a lined storage area. The Skyland Duke Energy generation plant has removed thousands of tons of ash from their storage ponds and transported it to the Asheville Airport where the ash is placed in lined landfills. The airport is then able to have more useable land on their property for future expansion. Thats what we must do at all sites in NC! NC coal plants have some of the cleanest emissions of coal plants in the US and they remain critical to providing 24/7/365 power for our community. A diversified energy generation mix of natural gas, coal, nuclear, renewables (solar, wind, biomass, hydro etc.) and efficiency will help us safely, reliably and affordably meet our energy needs. NC has traditionally maintained some of the lowest power rates in the US and its important for economic development and families that we keep our rates as low as possible.
