Thanks to a friend who reminded me that today is the yartzeit, the anniversary of the passing, of Rabbi Yisroel Meir Kagan . Better known as the Chofetz Chaim, after his seminal work on the laws pertaining to proper speech , he also authored the 6 volume Mishna Brurah which is learned and referenced world over daily to codify and clarify the hows of a Torah life. The story is told that the Chofetz Chaim was called as a character witness in a high profile trial and the defense attorney hoped to impress the judge with the credentials of his star witness. This man, your honor, would rip up the cost postage on packages that people would deliver as a favor to the great sage. He did this so the government would not lose out. The doubtful judge asked the attorney if he really believed such a story. The attorney replied with the utmost candor, Your honor, they dont tell stories like that about you and me!! May his memory and the Torah he has bequeathed us inspire and teach us daily.
