Thanksgiving is always a big event for Bubba and his family. It’s a time to see long lost relations and they even get to check old crazy uncle Seth out from the county home for a day. This year’s celebration was one for the record books. There was Bubba, Cindy Lou, Bubba, Jr., Clell and Miss Edna plus Bubba’s best friend Roy and his brood. Bubba, Jr. brought his girlfriend, the freckled and be-speckled Carla Jane Simpson. There were cousins comin’ out of the woodwork. The place was so crowded, they had to make extra tables from old scrap lumber and saw horses. Every room had a table. At last count, there were 41 people in all. Cindy Lou even invited Bubba, Jr.’s new teacher and head master, Sister Mac (Mary Alice Catherine for short) and Father Flanagan. However, when the Reverend Bobby Ray Deacon (Bubba and Cindy Lou’s pastor) stopped by to bless the whole affair, he and Father Flanagan didn’t quite see eye to eye over the best way to say Grace. The table was set with all the bounty of a Southern family festival. Cindy Lou roasted a 32 pound turkey while Bubba and Clell deep friend three more. Nobody brought ham, but there was a hog on an open pit. There was so much home baked bread, they could have started their own bakery. There was turkey stuffing, stove top stuffing, and corn bread stuffing plus gravy served up in a puch bowl. Add in green beans, yams covered in marsh mallows, creamed corn casserole, and collards and you had all the fixins for a legendary event. Miss Edna, who is starting to lose it, figured if a few cloves in her famous pumpkin pies were good, then a bunch of cloves would be better. She brought eight of those pies and they were so bad, the boys used them for skeet targets. But dessert was not lost, there wre plenty of pecan pies, cherry pies, cakes, and fresh homemade whipped cream. Oh, and sweet tea and fresh cider (well, fresh fermented cider) quenched everybody’s thirst. When all was said and done, Bubba and Cindy Lou decided they were especially thankful for close relations, good friends, a bountiful harvest, good health (cholesteral aside), and a free America where they could celebrate and worship without fear. Bless all their hearts.
