Thanksgiving was always my moms holiday. She would stay up all night, drinking wine and drunk cooking, laughing and talking all night with who ever stopped by to visit; She would make just about any dish someone said they liked, even if it wasnt traditional Thanksgiving food. There were so many years we had nothing at all, but somehow she managed to pull off a beautiful Thanksgiving dinner. We had never met many of the guests who came to eat with us before - they were often people my mom would come across at a store or at work and strike up a conversation, only to find out that they had no family or friends to spend the holiday with - so they came and spent it with us. It was common to spend a family day with strangers who we would never see again, but I loved that she opened our home to them. I was 21 when my mom made her last Thanksgiving dinner. She was expecting several extra people for dinner, and she had plenty of wine to last the night while she cooked. One of her brothers and her sister dropped in to visit while she cooked. My uncle said he never really liked turkey and that he sure did love the way my mom made a roast, so she made a late night run to the store and roast went on the menu. She made him a beautiful roast with all the trimmings, but when there was no room left in the fridge, she covered it tight and set it out on the back porch in the cold temps. The next morning she went to get it, and found her roasting pan out in the alley, a dog licking the last of it off the lid of the pan; that dog had enjoyed what was likely to be the greatest meal of his life that night! My mom wasnt even mad... she just laughed and laughed about that roast all day long! Happy Thanksgiving :)
