That Electoral College Thing There’s lots of talk going around these days of getting rid of the Electoral College. Bad idea. Very very bad idea. The Electoral College is a dam against the flood of demagoguery that occurs whenever national issues take on an emotional pitch, especially in areas of large populations like the East & West coasts. The only problem as I see it is the way the electors are chosen & numbered. States w/ huge populations like Texas, California, & New York get more electoral delegates. That’s democracy, the power of numbers. It assures the population centers of the coasts all the sway they need to win elections. Coupled w/ technological shenanigans, & we-the-pipsqueaks might as well not even vote. It’s a done deal. Recall Bush Junior’s Florida fiasco. The coasts & major centers will win hands down every time. The adjustments, as I see it, must be made in the numbers & in how the electors are selected. Population numbers should have nothing to do w/ representation in the College. Give each state three electors, period, end of discussion. These should be chosen randomly from the citizenry of the states, & the process ought to be televised & recorded for public viewing & inspection. The electors must be of good character (e.g. no felonies in the last 25 years) & U.S. citizens for at least 20 years. NO ELECTRONIC MACHINES may be used in selecting electors. All electronic devices can be manipulated. Random numbers of nine digits are sent to each citizen of the state. The citizen inspects his number, signs the small card, tears off the signature stub, & sends the number to the state in a secured, postage-paid envelop. Numbers one through nine are placed into a glass container. The container (filled w/ numbered Ping-Pong balls) is tumbled for a good minute by a student from a secondary school, a blindfolded citizen opens a small hatch on the container, & one number rolls out for inspection. The process is repeated until nine numbers are chosen. The person w/ that number—all nine digits in precisely the order picked, is a candidate for elector. Each electoral candidate is given a supernumerary, selected the same way. This process continues until the state has six electoral candidates. If one of the electors is disqualified or dies, the supernumerary takes his place. Those chosen must show their stubs to their town clerk or whoever is in charge of voting, and they are given a background check. If anyone is disqualified, his supernumerary is called upon for inspection. If he too fails the background check, the state must hold another selection from the remaining numbers until a qualified elector is found. Names are withheld from public record until the final three electoral delegates are chosen & cleared. They are NOT to be asked any questions pertaining to the coming election upon pain of prosecution for harassment & tampering w/ the ballots, a federal crime. The electors’ votes are entirely theirs alone & no one else’s business. How could I make it clearer? Votes must be made in indelible ink. There must be an unbroken chain of evidence from the private votes of the electors to the final count of their votes. All this should be done swiftly so as to prohibit private interests from access to the electors. No one is to be allowed w/i 30 meters of electors on their way to vote. No signs or placards are to be visible to the electors. Both are serious federal crimes of tampering & harassment. Electors must never discuss their decisions. Electors are to be escorted & protected by armed federal agents, from the electors’ homes to the voting chamber & back to their homes. Lobbyists should be put on notice that any kind of contact w/ electors would be cause for arrest & prosecution. Families of lobbyists, naturally, would be prohibited from being electors. Personally, I’d declare open hunting season on that bastard progeny of hell. But I digress— No attempt may be made to ascertain the votes of electoral delegates ever. That would constitute a breach of faith & trust, & it would be punishable by mandatory fines & imprisonment of all persons involved, including the media & their parent corporations. I hate dirty politics! And that should not be a redundancy. For my two cents, I would ban political parties as well. George Washington didn’t want them. Why should we? Candidates should be chosen on their character, records, & platforms, period. But that is another discussion. Your turn.
