The 18th century French philosopher Denis Diderot said, “Only passions, great passions, can elevate the soul to great things.” My passion for academics has helped me become a well rounded person and has aided me in growth as an individual. Focused and motivated, my passion for the academia, despite the challenges, has helped me build a strong foundation from prioritizing education, to becoming optimistic and very appreciative, and developing confidence which leads me in pursing my dreams. After graduating from high school with a low C grade point average, I realized that without an education that I would not be able to support and do for myself socially and financially. I went to El Camino College determined to do what was needed to become successful as a student. I sought help from counselors to discuss my major and the classes I needed; moreover, I discussed my goals for the future. My goals are to transfer to the University of Southern California to become an Aerospace Engineer so that I may accomplish my goal which is to work at NASA. Certain about myself, I began a journey dedicated to put education first. I joined organizations such as the Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement (MESA) club and the Honors Transfer Program (HTP) that rigorously pushed me to become well rounded socially and academically by attending seminars and workshops. Although challenges came along my path, I still strived and worked so diligently towards my profound passion. I experienced major challenges and difficulties along the way in and out of school. My environment around me was a challenge. I come from Watts (also called “south central L.A.). I would get ridicule by my peers and others at school because of where I lived. Not only was it challenging to focus with Growing up in a not to privilege home was challenging for me, people constantly judge where I had come from and it has been difficult to focus. I come from a family of seven. Myself along with my four younger siblings I am the oldest of five and were raised by hard working parents who did all they could to support us. Living in a three bedroom apartment, it was difficult for me to focus with my younger siblings around me. So, I chose to stay with my grandmother, who lives approximately two miles from me, to concentrate and focus on my studies. On an average, I studied about 45 to 60 hours and watch television only two hours a week. Despite where I lived, environment, I managed to work hard and did what I needed to succeed in my classes. When my student peers around me would find ways to seek out the failures that they were likely to make in challenging math and science courses, I focused on success and stayed optimistic the direct opposite. Even when the road got tough and at times I wanted to quit, I became optimistic about everything persevered. My confidence and motivation are what help me keep in mind of the have helped me pursue my dreams. I keep in mind of am driven towards becoming an Aerospace Engineer. Thus, I have began to cultivate and develop a healthy pride (elaborate a healthy pride in yourself, for???) Not out of arrogance and egotism, but out of the recognition that I can do what it takes with no procrastinations or excuses. When I need motivation, I watch NASA television to watch Astronauts repair or add new parts to the international space station. I would also go outside late at night and sky watch with my reflector telescope. These activities are what help motivate me and give me confidence in wanting to become an Aerospace Engineer. My passion and confidence have also made me a role model to my younger siblings. They come to me with questions or concerns that deals with academics. Being confident and motivated is a big contribution in my personal development. (I think this is an important part of your statement, if u could elaborate on this more) In closing, I know that my continuing enthusiasm for academics will lead me to my dreams and greater aspects of my life.
