The 2014 Nobel Prize in Literature was announced today--novelist - TopicsExpress

The 2014 Nobel Prize in Literature was announced today--novelist Patrick Modiano of France--and for the 21st consecutive year the winner was not an American. In fact, only one American born in the U.S. (Toni Morrison in 1993) has won the award since John Steinbeck received it in 1962! And yet, since the awards inception in 1901, the U.S. is second in overall wins (11) to France (15). It seems like theres been a bit of bias against American writers for several decades now, not good news for such worthy candidates as Philip Roth, Joyce Carol Oates, Thomas Pynchon and Cormac McCarthy...since theyre all getting up there in age, and you have to be alive to win.
