The 2014 local election will likely have some new rules. At the following website you can find two discussion papers. The first which we anticipate will become legislation shortly is designed to enhance transparency, compliance and enforcement. The second paper which is accepting public input until the end January 2014, is seeking to introduce expense limits in local elections. Those proposed changes we expect to see introduced into legislation after the 2014 election. cscd.gov.bc.ca/LocalGovtElectionReform/ I thought this might be helpful information on the intended changes coming for those planning on running in November 2014. This work is largely the product of an elections task force assembled by the UBCM to provide recommendations on what the membership saw as needed change. The following link will take you to the work done by the UBCM, their policy paper etc ubcm.ca/EN/main/resolutions/policy-areas/governance/elections-task-force.html I should note that none of this is a certainty at this time but the work has been in process since the 2008 election. In addition the Premier mandated the Minister to deliver this as part of the BC Liberals work plan.
