The 2014 theme for National Hispanic Heritage Month is Hispanics: A Legacy of History, A Present of Action and A Future of Success. Each year, we observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15th to October 15th to celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens with ancestors from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Hispanic population as of 2 July 2013 was 54.1 million, constituting 17.1 percent of the Nations total population. Hispanics are now the largest ethnic minority group in the U.S. To learn more about Hispanic Heritage Month and why we celebrate it, read the Presidential Proclamation at whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2014/09/12/presidential-proclamat ion-national-hispanic-heritage-month-2014, and participate in activities in your local area.
