The BIG question is not yet answered: If the European Union wants to continue its expansion east, is the U.S. military the guarantee of European aspirations, no matter how pronounced they become? Would we, through our NATO obligation be the ones to insure European hegemony from Brussels to Vladivostok? This is what Putin is testing for, the fault line, where will the Americans say to Europe whoa, maybe you have enough problems on your plate without further expansion east.... Which brings us to an essential hard to answer question: Why do the bureaucrats in Brussels think that EU expansion in the east MUST happen, and in a hurry? This is the American bind: We do NOT want to see Putin encouraged in his aggression BUT we do not want to effectively let Europe be as reckless as they choose knowing our military must back them up no matter what they do. It is a razors edge for the U.S. to walk.
