Huntingtons disease (HD) is a fatal hereditary disease that destroys neurons in areas of the brain that involve movement, intellect, and emotions. Huntingtons disease is also a disease that if allowed, can destroy marriages, separate families, ruin relationships & friendships. Ive always thought of us as a very strong family unit. I have always felt that Robert was blessed to be surrounded by so much love and support. I was right and I want to believe itll always remain this way. The past three weeks have been testing in every which way. Roberts New Year started off with some very unexpected & extremely distressing news. Marriage is hard enough, add a terminal disease to it, it can make some people break. Of course he is devastated. Of course his spirit is shattered. Of course his heart is broken. But he is not alone. His heart will heal in time. And he will be okay. He is surrounded by lots of love. Lots & lots of love. A disease like this can crush you to your core. It already takes away so much...the ability to talk, to walk, to rationalize, your freedom, and so much more. As Roberts mom, I can not control any of those things. The only things that I can control is the love I share with him. The care I give to him. And the happy (and not so happy) moments I spend with him. Hes not alone. He never will be. He is reminded of this daily. He will never have to fight HD on his own. He will never have to battle loneliness on his own. He will never have to walk through life on his own. I will be his witness through this courageous fight. I will witness his smiles and his cries through the hardships. I, along with many other people who truly love Robert, will witness that he is one amazing teacher in this crazy, sometimes unfair, but beautiful thing called life. Because I Love Him.
