This encouraged Maliki to offer Iran a political trump card that led to deepening Americas need for the Iranian regime which has been competing with Saudi Arabia and Turkey over serving the US in the Middle East and attempting to achieve sectarian and political gains, especially now the traditional role played by the Salafi movement and the Muslim Brotherhood has ebbed.
