The Beggar One day a man was having dinner with his wife. A roasted chicken was before them. Suddenly a beggar called at their door. The man went to the door and reprimanded the beggar harshly. The beggar returned empty-handed. Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) so willed that the man was soon deprived of all his blessings and ended up becoming a beggar himself. He divorced his wife too and she married someone else. Then one night it so happened that this husband and wife were having dinner and a roasted chicken was before them when a beggar knocked at their door. The husband told the wife to go and give the roasted chicken to the beggar. So she took the chicken and went to the door. What she saw was that the beggar was her first husband. She gave him the chicken and returned crying. The husband asked why she was crying so she told him that the beggar had been her husband. She told him of what had happened as a result of scorning a beggar. The husband said, “I swear by Allah, that first beggar was none other than me!”The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) used to supplicate thus: “Allahumma inni audhu bika min zawali nimatika, wa tahawwuli afiyatika, wa fujaati niqmatika, wa jamii sakhatika (O Allah! I seek refuge in You against the declining of Your Favours, passing of safety, the suddenness of Your punishment and all that which displeases You).” [Riyadh as-Saliheen] “Allah gives an example: There was a town, secure and content with its sustenance coming in plenty from every place. Then it turned ungrateful to the bounties of Allah; so Allah made it taste hunger and terror (that covered it) like a garment, as recompense for what its people used to do.” [Quran: Surah An-Nahl, Ayat 112]
