The Boot It or Loose It Campaign Good Day There is a slight increase again at schools with regards to vehicle related crimes. During the past weeks there were incidents reported of theft out of motor vehicles at the following schools: Lynnwood Primary, Anton van Wouw, Mother Bear Nursery and Waterkloof Primary. Most of these incidents occurred during the early hours between 06:30 and 08:00. Please sensitize parents and learners who will use their own vehicles to write exams to remove all valuables from their vehicles. Theft out of motor vehicles remains an opportunistic crime. Herewith a media statement that was recently issued: BOOT IT OR LOSE IT CAMPAIGN PRETORIA –Theft out of motor vehicles is a very avoidable crime and it can be tackled head on with the assistance of motorists. The Brooklyn police have an active awareness campaign named: “Boot it or Lose it” that was rolled out to the whole of the Sunnyside Cluster (Brooklyn, Garsfontein, Sunnyside, Villieria, Pretoria Moot and Lyttelton police stations). The aim of the “Boot it or Lose it” campaign that was launched in August 2013, is to make motorists aware of smash-and-grab incidents and to prevent theft out of motor vehicles. Most of these crimes can be prevented through basic precautionary measures. Any visible loose items that are left inside a vehicle create an opportunity for would-be criminals to commit a crime. Motorists are reminded through this campaign to remove all loose items from the vehicle before travelling. Therefore – “Boot it or Lose it”! Female drivers often think that if they put their handbags under the seat, that it will be safe. But it is not! The safest place for any loose items such as handbags, cellular phones, clothing and parcels, remain in the back of the boot. Motorists are reminded to keep doors and windows locked. They must constantly be on the look-out for suspicious-looking characters and do not have to hesitate to report them to the police. The South African Police Service recommends that motorists do not support beggars and street sellers at intersections. Not only are their activities illegal and dangerous to themselves and motorists, it also create opportunities for criminals to commit crime. Motorists are also educated about the use of remote control jamming devices as there is a marked increase in theft out of motor vehicle incidents where no physical break in occurred. Drivers must not assume that their vehicles are locked when a remote control is used to lock their vehicle, even when they park their vehicles in shopping malls or controlled parking areas. Drivers are advised to physically check whether the doors are locked before moving away from their vehicle. Brooklyn police officers are often seen handing out bookmarks with the message “Boot it or Lose it” at shopping malls and areas where there is a high density of parked vehicles. The Brooklyn police hope that through this campaign that motorist will start to adhere to the message by putting all their loose items in the boot – only then there will be a remarkable reduction in vehicle related crimes. Ends. Description: Boot it or lose it Thank you for your assistance in this regard Kind Regards Captain Colette Weilbach Brooklyn Corporate Communication (012) 366 1845
