The Buttery Well is shown on the 1861 map of Kendal that also shows Anchorite Well. freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry/~orangesearch/kendalmap1861.jpg So I thought I would see if I could track it down. I found the remains still here next to the stream tucked in behind the houses of Gillingate. Unfortunatley the surrounding gardens have used the approach as a garden waste dump and the original paved access is now blocked with tree cuttings. I havnt been able to find anything about the origins of the name, or any history, so I dont know if it had healing or spiritual significance, but it is a shame that it is now so neglected and disrespected.
