The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is an expressionistic horror film produced in 1920 and based on a screenplay written partly by Carl Mayer. A Jewish Austrian screenwriter, he wrote scripts for a number of famous films in Germany in the Weimar period. Originally from Graz, Austria, he spent most of his working life in Berlin. In 1933, as both a Pacifist and a Jew, he was compelled to flee Europe immediately. He died in London in 1942, nearly forgotten and broke, of cancer in a hospital. Today a prize in Graz is named in his honor.
