The Candy Cane As Christians, we dont worship symbols or icons. - TopicsExpress

The Candy Cane As Christians, we dont worship symbols or icons. However, during this holiday season, most of us will decorate our homes with candy canes. Most of us have no idea what is behind the story of the candy cane. I think you will find it interesting. A candy maker in Indiana wanted to make a candy that would be a testimony to Christ, so he made the candy cane. He incorporated symbols for the birth, ministry, and the death of Christ. He began with a stick of pure white, hard candy. The white symbolizes the sinless nature of Christ (IICorinthians 5:21) The hardness symbolizes the fact that Jesus is the rock, the foundation of the church. It also represents the firmness of Gods promises which are made through Christ. The candy maker from Indiana made the candy in the form of a J to represent the precious name of Jesus. In Hebrew, his name is Joshua, also beginning with a J. The name in both Covenants means Saviour. If the J is turned upside down it looks like a shepherds staff. Jesus is the good Shepherd who looks after his sheep (John 10:14-18). Thinking that the candy cane was somewhat plain, the candy maker stained it with red stripes. He used three small stripes to show the stripes of the scourging Jesus received, by which we are healed (I Peter 2:24). The large red stripe was for the blood shed by Christ on the cross so that we could have eternal life. The candy became known as a candy cane-often a meaningless decoration during the holidays. Every Sunday Christians commune to remember the suffering and victory of Christ. I hope this divine act never loses its meaning with us, as the candy makers candy has. Let us never forget what the emblems represent. JESUS is the Reason for the Season!
