The Center for Emergent Diplomacy is launching a long-term project to convene and facilitate global action to change our worldwide economic paradigm. The first stage, Bretton Woods 3.0, offers a new negotiation platform at a conference planned for early summer, 2016. The conference is ACTION FOCUSED, confronting the moral and ethical implications of a 21st century global culture where the value of every human activity is based solely on whether it contributes to an unlimited and unsustainable economic growth model. “Gross National Happiness is more important than Gross National Product”, declared young King Jigme Wangchuck of Bhutan. The Bhutanese challenge to market capitalism, begun in 1972, has catalyzed an international effort to measure human development differently and is the inspiration for Bretton Woods 3.0. We share the frustration of many others that we often KNOW what works and what we should do, BUT WE DON’T DO IT! Perhaps the reason is that we are paralyzed by the overwhelming complexity of our modern world and simply don’t know what to do or how to take action. At the same time, social entrepreneurs everywhere are leading change in greening the economy, promoting resilient local communities, addressing global political and corporate corruption caused by the influence of money, and perhaps most important, starting a serious global movement addressing the immorality of economic inequality. The social movement to change the 70 year-old global economic paradigm to one of Gross National Happiness begins and ends with mindful awareness of the ACTIONS needed for change. That awareness is already present in many grassroots campaigns, but these efforts are rarely pulled together in order to promote COLLECTIVE action.
