The Certification debate is heating up in mind. I just had to defer a potential client because I got booked up, she asked for some names of other doulas, and remarked that she had been having trouble finding a doula who is responsive and reliable. Certified doulas sign of Code of Ethics that states they will act in accordance with the highest standards of professional integrity. Anyone, *anyone* can call themselves a doula, but to be a Certified Doula means having made a commitment to excellence, and it means going through the growth and expanded ability of the Certification process. I know Certification is just a start, and there are well qualified doulas out there who are not certified and have integrity, but I believe Certification does stand for some professionalism. I am disturbed by the growing number of doulas deciding not to get certified, or to let it lapse-- either because it doesnt hold value for them or because they dont want to be held to certain standards.
