The City of Calgary has declared a local state of emergency, due to the high river flows and heavy rain, and is asking residents in several neighbourhoods to evacuate. Members of the Calgary Police Service and the Calgary Fire Department will be going door to door in the affected communities to notify residents of the evacuation order. As well, Calgary Transit is on standby to help residents who cannot leave on their own. People should find shelter with friends or relatives for the next 72 hours. For those who have no where to go, reception areas have been set up at the Southland Leisure Centre at 2000 Southland Dr. S.W. and the Acadia Recreation Complex at 240 90 Ave. S.E. An additional centre will be set up after 8:00 p.m. at the Centre Street Church at 3900 2 Street N.E. People should ensure that they take identification, prescription medications and other critical personal items with them. Anyone with pets should also take them with them and if that is not an option, pets can be taken to the Animal Service Centre at 2201 Portland St.S.E. The city is updating evacuations on its website and is providing maps of those neighbourhoods that are on the list.
