The City of Decatur and the Economic Development Corporation of Decatur and Macon County (“EDC”) are jointly sponsoring a public informational meeting on the Decatur Plugged-In Initiative. The meeting will be held at 9 a.m. on Thursday, May 29 in the Madden Auditorium at the Decatur Public Library. Cindy Laegeler, one of the community leaders who has worked to develop this initiative stated: “Decatur Plugged-In began as a simple idea to expand the number of neighborhood cameras used to monitor areas of higher crime incidence and has subsequently grown into a major community initiative with broad-ranging applicability and significant economic and quality of life implications. What is now envisioned is the development of a high-speed, high-capacity fiber backbone through the core of the City of Decatur.” Ryan McCrady, City Manager for the City of Decatur and one of the individuals who has worked to develop the full scope of this initiative noted: “The City of Decatur has taken initial developmental steps with the installation of fiber to connect key City facilities. The full development of this system will provide opportunities for educational institutions, businesses, governmental units and individuals to tap into the capabilities this fiber network can provide. In addition to the significant economic benefits, the system will also greatly enhance the perception and reality of quality of life attributes of our community.” The EDC has contracted with Wide Open Networks (“WON”) to assist in the development of a business plan, implementation plan and operational plan for this overall effort. Representatives from WON will be present to answer questions at Thursday’s meeting and discuss the planning processes and describe the expected benefits based on their experience with other similar initiatives
