The City of Onawa will apply to be host city for Ragbrai 2015. Dates for Ragbrai 2015 are July 19-25, and the announcement will be made in January 2015. A committee of county-wide individuals are serving as the steering committee. Plans include concerts, local vendor opportunities, etc. The money generated in the host communities is incredible! Riders spend lots of money at local stores and restaurants. Some riders choose to spend the first night in towns close to the host city—which could provide additional financial benefit to many of our towns. This would be a great opportunity for local groups’ fundraising efforts as vendors, either in Onawa or the towns the riders will pass through. Depending on the route, it is likely that it would travel through a number of our communities. I encourage you and your local groups to discuss fundraising possibilities! You will need to act fast! I also request you write letters of support to the Ragbrai selection committee, whether or not your organization would be involved in fundraising. Please remember that the positive financial impact will be felt county-wide! The more letters collected for the application (due by August 15 ) the better chance we have of hosting this event. This year’s host city presented over 200 letters of support with their application!. Your letter of support should be addressed to the Ragbrai Selection Committee and include reasons for Ragbrai to start in Onawa (specifically the county-wide financial impact), ways that your organization will participate (fundraising, vendors, housing/camping options for riders) and present a positive invitation to enjoy our communities.
