The Cleveland browns are making folks very happy this year, but - TopicsExpress

The Cleveland browns are making folks very happy this year, but I’m not referring to the ones you may be thinking of! The Rocky River has received an unprecedented number of brown trout this fall into winter, most of which have been welcome surprise catches by steelhead trout anglers. These sought-after sportfish look superficially like a steelhead trout, but typically have a medium brown colored back, buttery yellow sides, and larger black spots. This has been a surprise because Ohio does not stock them and they are not native to this continent. So, where are they coming from? In the past few years, Pennsylvania has expanded their Lake Erie brown trout stocking program, and many of the fish observed in Ohio are no doubt strays from that effort. And, what would make a brown trout swim all the way to Cleveland from PA? Well, even fish know Cleveland is the home of the browns, of course! And our local anglers definitely don’t mind a bit. ~Mike Durkalec, Natural Resources
